Last Tuesday the children in Reception enjoyed learning all about Shrove Tuesday- Pancake Day. They discovered that the day is celebrated to mark the beginning of Lent a time when Christains are preparing for Easter. In the past Christians would give up 'rich' foods and drink during Lent and would use up their milk and eggs by making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.
We shared the story 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' which taught the children the ingredients that they needed to make their delicious pancakes. Luckily unlike the characters in the story the children kindly worked together to prepare the batter, whisking up the eggs, flour and milk!
The children made observations of the changes that happened as the dry and wet ingredients were mixed, once the batter was smooth the pancakes were cooked in the pan and the pancake flipping began!
Each class completed a tally chart to identify the favourite pancake topping and the children added their lemon and sugar before settling down to enjoy their delicious cooking!
Mrs Breakwell, Mrs Agostini and Mrs McCloy also enjoyed a special pancake treat delivered by the Reception class children!
Finally the children enjoyed replicating the great pancake race that takes place in Olney each year!
