This years theme for Children's Mental Health Week was 'Know Yourself, Grow Yourself.' Here in Reception we talked about the importance of not only keeping our bodies healthy, but also the importance of keeping our minds healthy.
In the atelier we set up an 'Affirmation Station' which each child visited throughout the week to look at themselves in the mirror, draw a positive portrait of themselves and recall a positive affirmation!
Affirmations are positive statements that can help reframe negative feelings. It was a joy to hear the children speaking positively about themselves and to see the smiles spread across their faces. The positivity really was infectious!
Some of the affirmations shared included... I am kind, I am strong, I am smart, I am safe, I am joyful, I am happy, I am helpful.
We have encouraged the children to say some of these positive affirmations everyday!
Towards the end of the week we thought about the importance of mindfulness and calmness in our busy lives and participated in a Cosmic Yoga session which is brilliant for developing our core body strength and relaxing the mind.
Finally to finish the week we all listened to some relaxing music whilst we coloured some positive affirmations to put on our walls at home!
We worked really hard to focus our minds on colouring neatly within the lines as we listened to the music and quietly chatted to our friends. It was wonderful to hear the children sharing positive comments with each other... "That looks really good!" "You have coloured that in so neatly!"
Well done Reception!
