Schools Then & Now

This term the children in Reception have enjoyed learning about schools in the past. We spent some time looking at photographs of our school which was built fairly recently in 2007 and compared it with local primary school Kingsthorpe Grove Primary which was built in 1906, over 100 years ago.

The children enjoyed looking at old black and white photographs and noticed lots of differences about schools in the past...

"There are no toys in their classroom."

"The children are all sitting at their own desk."

"They do not have an interactive screen in their class like we do."

We invited families to share old school photos and memories and we were overwhelmed with the response! The children loved looking at the photographs of their grandparents and parents at school and this lead to lots of discussions.

"Some of the children are not wearing school uniform like we do."

"They have sports day just like we do today!"

"In the past they had milk in glass bottles, we have milk in cartons."

"The children are writing on blackboards with chalk, we write with pencils and paper."

The children enjoyed sequencing these photographs on a timeline from those from the past and those nearer to the present.

We were also lucky enough to have a special session with Ethan's Grandparents who kindly offered to share their school memories. The children absolutely loved listening to their memories and looking at the fabulous photographs! Thank you!
