Last week was a special time at the nursery as we shared two very different celebrations: Earth Day and St. George’s Day. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to think about the world around them and the stories that connect us.
Caring for the Earth

On April 22nd, we spent time talking about our planet. It was wonderful to hear the children’s thoughts on why caring for the earth is so important. We chatted about simple things we can do at home, like recycling, to keep our environment healthy.
To bring those ideas to life, we got creative with some "junk modelling." The children had an immersive, focused morning turning everyday scraps into imaginative new objects. We also spent time making observational art, using soft layers of blue and green tissue paper to create our own versions of the Earth.
🛡Dragons and Brave Hearts

On April 23rd, we shifted our focus to the legend of St. George and the Dragon. After sharing the story together, the children worked on a big collaborative dragon. It was a real team effort; we cut the shape from cardboard and let the children choose from a variety of textures—soft felt, scraps of fabric, and shiny foil—to add the "scales."
We also spent a peaceful afternoon crafting shields. The children used silver paint for the borders and practiced their pre-writing skills by carefully painting a red cross in the centre.
Beyond the crafts, it was a gentle way to talk about British values and of bravery and kindness; talking about what it means to be a helper in our own small ways.
