We have had fun this week focusing on space which coincides with our Rhyme Town of '5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer', Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the change in weather.
In Rhyme Town this week we have been focusing on '5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer.' Our pre-writing shape is a square. Inspired by this the children wanted to create a 'dark den' in our roleplay area, we have been exploring using tourches and dressing up as spacemen. We also enjoyed baking 'rock cakes' to represent the rocks on the moon, colouring in pictures of aliens and working on our fine motor skills in the sand where we've been making shapes with rockets and spacemen.
Our story focus this week has been 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' which coincides with our maths where we are beginning to order number names and subitising to three. The children have enjoyed using puppets to act out the story and work on their number skills. This also helps the children build their confidence when speaking in part of a group. Alongside this we've also made porridge for breakfast! Most of the children tried the porridge and were able to relate it to the story straight away.
The change in the weather has been a big topic of conversation at Nursery as many of the children have never seen snow before! The children have been fascinated in how water changes state, from liquid to colid, and back again. We froze thr water tray and put some arctic animals in there so the children could feel the ice, discuss the different properties of the animals and how they are different from the animals in this country. We have also spoken to the children about how important it is to look after the animals during the cold temperatures, we've had lots of fun feeding the birds and seeing which ones we could spot in the outdoor areas. They also enjoyed looking for ice outside.
