Our Curriculum Information
Bridgewater staff work together on our approach to the curriculum, ensuring that it is research based and linked to the science of effective learning.
Our aim is to teach the children and transfer new knowledge from the short term into their long-term memory over time.
The children embed learning as they travel through school connecting ideas, facts, information and concepts, into expanding schemas of knowledge.
Our curriculum is structured with stand-alone subject areas, which we may link where it enhances the understanding and acquisition of knowledge.
Within the subject areas, we focus the learning on key threshold concepts, which have been derived from the National Curriculum Programmes of Study and Aims.
Each subject leader will ensure that there is progression within units of learning, across the year group and throughout our inclusive school. We also thread drivers through our curriculum, for example diversity and growth mindset. Lessons are sequenced, to build on prior knowledge and they are scaffolded so that every child can achieve. We support SEND children who are working on a personalised programme, with units of work from the ‘Pebbles’ curriculum, where learning is broken down further allowing children to access learning at the appropriate level and build the smaller steps towards their next objectives.
We engage and motivate the children to embed new knowledge and understanding, and structure the learning by spacing it and building in retrieval practice regularly in accordance with Cognitive Load Theory.
We place a balanced emphasis across the curriculum valuing all subjects and we are a school that loves its music, sports and arts alongside the core subjects with a big emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths); underpinned with our values and awareness of our place in the world.
