Exploring shapes

        122

We have had lots of visitors this week all dropping in for a stay and play! It’s great to see so many grown-ups coming in to visit the children and to speak to their child’s key worker about their learning.

The main focus this week was all things to do with shapes. The children have been recognising different shapes in the nursery and particularly enjoyed finding a variation in the ice. We have also been making different models with a lots of resources. The children and grown-ups started discussing what kind of shapes they may be using or creating whilst using language associated with shapes.

On the writing table the children have been interested in collage making. Using lots of materials and different shaped canvases they have all created something unique. It has been great to see the children taking their time with this activity and really focusing on it.

Lastly, we have been getting busy in the kitchen. Everyone has loved getting messy and creative with some ingredients, it has really sparked the children’s imagination.

A few weeks ago, one of the children showed a real interest in making shape biscuits. We thought it fitted in really well with our shape learning this week. The children loved taking part in making the biscuits, but enjoyed eating them more!

As we are also looking at changes this term, we wanted the children to make something where you could visibly see a change. Therefore, we thought bread was perfect for this. The children were amazed as to why the bread expanded and what was making this happen.

Next week…

Next week we are going to be learning about the celebration Chinese New Year and associating it with other known celebrations. We will explore objects associated with the celebration, cook and taste traditional Chinese tea and food, listen to traditional New Year stories and get busy creating New Year crafts.

We will also be looking at where China is and what China looks like. Continuing on with shapes we will be looking at the shapes that we can see in the buildings and we will be recreating some of the traditional and modern structures around china using our construction toys and recycled objects.

We will also be listening to traditional stories throughout the week with a focus on Goldilocks and the three bears. While reading the stories we will be learning about the characters, settings and events.

How you can help at home?

-      You can help at home by talking to your children about the celebrations that they like and know. Discuss how they are celebrated and why we celebrate certain things.

-      Read traditional stories and talk about their favourite story with them. While reading with them it would be great to talk to them about the characters, settings and events in the story.
