Exploring Nursery Rhymes

We have been doing some fantastic activities in the Nursery this week. However, we have also enjoyed visiting the School to go to the library, have our P.E session in the hall and use the studio to do some singing with Early Years!

Our focus this week was working on nursery rhymes. The children have loved this! We have been creating pictures of how we think our favourite nursery rhymes may look, also in groups, everyone has been working with a grown up to challenge themselves to look and listen for rhyming words. In particular we have been focusing on the book ‘Oi Frog’. It is a book the children have really engage with and found fun.

In the outdoor area some of the children have loved the hoola hoops. They have been using them to see how far they can travel, discussing who’s went the furthest. When doing this activity, the children noticed what shape the hoola hoop was. This led onto the children looking around their environment, to see if they could find other circles. The children then had a challenge to explore the Nursery to see if they could find any other different shapes.

Throughout the Nursery we have been exploring changes. However, the children have predominantly liked what we have been doing in the Atelier room this week. On the work bench everyone has been exploring how rice and pasta feels and looks like in its natural form. The children then wanted to do an experiment to see what happened when they are put into water. After leaving them for a while, everyone came back to see what had happened and to discuss the differences using all of our senses. Towards the end of the week we explore jelly. The children were fascinated by how it changed, and a discussion was led onto what process the jelly had been through.

Next week we are learning about shapes. We will be exploring shapes in our environment, playing shape games and making pictures using shapes. We will talk about the properties of shapes and explore language, such as straight and curved edges.

We are also learning about changes over time. Last week we were exploring winter and looking at the changes in the seasons as long term changes. We were also exploring how food changes when it is heated, cooled or submerged. We will continue with this and we will be making bread and shape biscuits this week.

How can you help at home?

At home you could help by finding shapes and patterns in a variety of environments.

We are also exploring changes over time, for example learning about the characteristics of liquids and solids by involving children in melting chocolate or cooking eggs. We have also been talking about the weather and how the seasons change.
