Take One Picture Project

We looked and analysed the picture 'The Finding of Moses' by Orazio Gentileschi. We discussed our current geographical and historic focus of our local community, particularly Abington Park and Ancient Greek times.

Together we explored the idea of connecting what we already know about Ancient Greece alongside our love of our local community.  We decided to express this artistically through movement in the form of a dance and in conjunction, design, create and model Greek togas to wear during the performance.  We called the concept ‘A Journey Through Time’.

Initially, we explored our local community, focussing on the present form and features of the past.  We discussed geographical weathering from biological to chemical and the effect on nature.  We linked this to the climate in Greece and how this differs from our own.  We used the colours and influences from nature and our local community, along with fashion from Ancient Greek times to design our toga belts and use this as inspiration for our dance choreography.

We explored different types of stitching and built upon our experience of fabric dying to design toga belts using tie dye to add our own individual expression of nature inspired by the local community.  We used our sewing skills to construct our togas and modelled these during our performance.

Helping at Home

In Year 5, the children are set weekly spellings on a Thursday which are tested on the following Friday. They are also set an additional piece of homework with either a Maths, English, Science, History or Geography link. It is expected that the children use Times Tables Rockstars a couple of times a week; they have their own password to access this activity.

In addition to this, please continue to support your child with their reading by regularly reading to them, listening to them read and asking them questions about their reading. This should also be logged on Boom Reader.

Although many children read fluently and independently at this age, in order to build higher level comprehension skills, it is important that they are given the opportunity to discuss what they have read and share their opinions about texts. Everyone will also get the chance to visit the school library each week, so they have a reading for pleasure book to go alongside their coloured book band.

PE is each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon so please make sure your children come to school in the appropriate kit on these days. During the colder months, the children may need additional clothing for the weather.
