Orienteering!

This week, as part of our geography and PE curriculum, year 5 have been orienteering around Abington Park!

Before leaving, the children considered risks which they may come across at Abington Park and how to overcome these. For instance, the children recognised that some dogs may not be as tame as their own and not to pet them, and to stay a safe distance away from the lakes. Throughout our walk, the children were responsible for managing risks they came across independently.

We walked to the park where each group had a map to follow, and used to compasses to work out which direction they were heading in and needed to turn to. As we went round, the children took photos and sketched points of interest.

When we arrived back at school, the children used the photos and sketches they had made to make their own maps for other groups to follow. In the afternoon we followed these, again using compass skills to ensure we were heading in the right direction.

Escher were very lucky and had a lovely day to spend time in the sun! Dali and Gaudi weren't so lucky - well done to the children who persevered and didn't let the rain get to them!
