Poetic Performers!

This week in English, we have been learning about the poem The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll. This is a narrative poem with many strange twists and turns! Reading the poem allowed us to learn new vocabulary such as billows, dismal and beseech.

We have focussed on the personification in the poem, and come up with our own descriptions for personified objects. We ensured the verbs we used were relevant to the way that our object would act - becoming the objects in a drama activity helped us to imagine this!

Here are some great examples:

"As the ice cube slides around the freezer elegantly trying to find a way out, he spots a crack in the wall and squeezes himself out, skidding and prancing out of control!"

"As the wind swirled freely through the forest, which was getting darker, it howled fiercely like a wolf. She washed through the tree, making the leaves rustle. She made the grass shiver and the leabes whirl in the air. Wherever she flew, she brought with her the cold sensation of winter."

We have also learnt about the composition of this poem. We learnt that its fast beat produces a happy and upbeat atmosphere, and that each line started on the off-beat. We then practised our performance skills when performing the poem, using musical instruments to help us.
