In Year 6, we have two classes: 6 Warhol and 6 Vasarely. Miss Holmes is the Class Teacher in 6 Warhol and Mrs Sinclair and Mrs Mawer are the Class Teachers in 6 Vasarely. Miss Scott is our Teaching Assistant who supports across both classes and runs some intervention groups, Mrs Archer is a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (who supports both classes on a Tuesday morning) and Mrs Hillery is a Learning Support Assistant, based in 6 Vasarely.
In Year 6, we strive to meet the end of Key Stage 2 expectations and prepare the children for their SATs in a supportive environment. We try to instil independence in the children, as well as develop their resilience and the skills they will need to prepare them for Secondary School and beyond.

The Giant's Necklace

Over the last two weeks, we have been reading The Giant's Necklace, a book by Michael Morpurgo. To begin with, we read only the beginning, where the main character, Cherry, was washed away by the sea, having been trapped by the incoming tide. We then planned and wrote our own endings for the story, thinking about what could happen to her next and who might come to rescue or help her.
Next, we read the actual ending of the story and found out that Cherry had climbed a cliff, found a cave and met some ghosts of miners inside. We then acted out the conversations they may have had to help us practise writing and punctuating dialogue correctly.

Helping at Home
In Year 6, the children are set weekly spellings on a Monday which are tested on a Friday. On Thursday we also set two additional pieces of home learning which are due on a Tuesday.
In addition to this, children will be setting up revision folders over the spring half term, so please support them in using these and creating a revision timetable to help them organise their workload in preparation for SATs. Please also continue to support your child by regularly reading with them, testing them on their times tables, and helping them to learn the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 spelling words, which they will be expected to evidence in their writing in class.
