The Flower.
Early Years have been enjoying reading a book called ‘The Flower,’ by John Light.
The children learnt about a young man named Brigg, who lives in a colourless world. They were encouraged to explore what Brigg’s world is like through a drama technique, called a “Freeze frame.” The children re-enacted a scene from the story and at the sound of a chime they froze into positions like a scene from the book. It took a lot of concentration to think about their expressions and body language. They were encouraged to share a thought when tapped on the shoulder about how they would feel if they lived in the cold grey city.
When Brigg discovers a mysterious book and a packet of seeds, the children were amazed to see that Brigg was able to create a piece of colour in his grey world. This provided an excellent opportunity to use their phonics knowledge to label a flower.
Brigg loves his beautiful flower and is sad when it gets swept away from him, but all is not lost. Something magical happens. The children were inspired to make flowers of their own and then ‘planted’ them into our book corners. Each and every one was unique.
