Dear Parents

Volunteer Helpers

We are looking for volunteers to hear children read and would welcome any parents or grandparents who could spare an hour or two.  If you are interested please speak to the office who will firstly need to carry out some DBS checks. This is to comply with safeguarding procedures that we have to do for all volunteers.   If you have any other skills such as gardening, sports, sewing, IT or chess for instance, please let us know as it can really help to enrich our curriculum and open up new passions and interests for our children.

Reading

As you may be aware it has been widely researched that the more children read and are exposed to books, the greater their range of vocabulary.  The research from the Department for Education reading framework is as follows:

“Here’s how many words kids would have heard by the time they were 5 years old: Never read to, 4,662 words; 1–2 times per week, 63,570 words; 3–5 times per week, 169,520 words; daily, 296,660 words; and five books a day, 1,483,300 words.”

If children read regularly, this means that they become fluent and can apply this to their writing in all areas of the curriculum.  I know most of you do read regularly but try to cultivate those habits where the children have a bedtime story as often as possible … whatever age they may be and try to read every day.  Read to your child and listen to them reading too.  The richer the vocabulary that they are exposed to, the more knowledge rich they become. This enables them to build their confidence and become fluent motivated learners.

We will soon be opening our library for family library sessions and the Reading Café – watch this space! I believe all the local libraries are open again too.

School Improvement Partner Visit

Our Northamptonshire School Improvement Partner had a lovely morning with us this week and enjoyed walking around school observing the children well settled, calm and engaged in their learning.

Young Leaders

Thank you to Pacesetters who are training our Young Leaders today in Y5 to run sports sessions and lead games with our younger children.
