Dear Parents

Diwali Parade Saturday 26th October 2024

Don’t miss the Diwali Parade which sets off from Northampton Town Centre on Saturday 26th October (first Saturday of half term) at 6pm.  Please come and support our Year 3 children who will be walking the route with the beautiful illuminated lanterns that they have made. It is a sight to be seen alongside other schools and groups and giant animatrons representing the story of Rama and Sita.

Mrs Douglas, Year 3 Leader, writes:

The route is as follows: Dychurch Lane, The Ridings, right onto St Giles Terrace, right onto St Giles Street, right onto St Giles Square, right onto Woodhill, it finishes in the Market Square near the stage where the celebrations continue.

Details of the day itself - Stalls 10am | Stage 1pm | Parade 6pm with cultural food and drink, community stalls, live stage entertainment, henna painting, arts and crafts, saree dressing and the spectacular Diwali lantern parade at dusk, featuring breath-taking giant puppets including Harminder the elephant. 8pm Festival ends.

Culture Week

Thank you so much to Amani, Eunice, Cleo and of course Mrs D’Agostino. We have had a wonderful inclusive cultural week organised by a group of Year 6 girls. It was very moving to see the children on stage in their outfits from around the world beaming and so proud. It was beautiful to hear Miss Sheikh speak in Urdu to a child new to school so that we could hear her thoughts. We had messages from parents who said their children hadn’t thought much about their heritage until this point and it fired their interest and made them want to research their countries, cultures and families. Children were making traditional dishes with their families to share with their classmates. It was such an important week celebrating every child’s family culture within the respectful context of our school community and British Values.

Mrs D’Agostino, our Spanish teacher, who organised the whole experience with the Year 6 girls writes:

We've had a fantastic couple of weeks of cultural appreciation at school.  Myself and the language ambassadors, introduced the concept to the school during a whole school assembly last week, considering what we mean by culture and what British culture is.  We shared a few suggestions and then had an overwhelmingly positive response when the children came in showcasing their different cultures a week later.  Featuring costumes and clothing from around the world, kit or accessories from all of the wonderful local clubs that you parents and carers encourage your children to participate in as well as the British Isles being represented by some lovely tartan kilts, a very Irish outfit and a fantastic set of bacon and eggs, we really did see it all!   Each child had the opportunity to explain what was special about their culture with their class.  Lots of food was shared thanks to you generous parents and some classes google mapped their families' countries of origin.  When creating whole class heart shaped jigsaw puzzles with everyone slotting in beautifully together, the sense of respect and togetherness was felt right across the school.  Heartfelt thanks to all of you for making Bridgewater's first ever Culture Day such a success.

Year 3 Dance Workshop

When showing the new intake parents around on a tour this morning, all 90 Year 3 children were listening carefully and having a good session learning to dance Swing, The Jive and Jitterbug with Anna Dainton.

Year 4 and Year 5 Girls Rugby

Some very muddy, happy girls were in the corridor yesterday who had had a brilliant morning with the Saints coaches playing rugby.

Have a lovely weekend
