Exploring weight

This week in maths, Year 1 have been learning about weight. They began the week getting to grips with mathematical vocabulary such as heavy, light and equal, whilst comparing and ordering objects.

The children soon moved onto comparing and ordering their objects using a pan balance, then learnt how to use these to measure an object’s weight too.

They have thoroughly enjoyed a week of practical lessons and we look forward to seeing the children applying what they’ve learnt to real life situations.

Did you know? A cake can be made by ensuring the flour, sugar and butter are each individually equal to the weight of the eggs. If you have a pan balance at home, perhaps you could explore this by baking a cake with your child and encouraging them to weigh out the ingredients in this way. Let us know how you get on!
